COMPLEX TRAUMA AND PHYSICAL ILLNESS

There has been a growing interest in the last decade about what is called complex or developmental trauma. Complex trauma is the result of exposure to traumatic events and their long-term effects. This includes mental health and physical health afflictions. Research has demonstrated the association between trauma and chronic disease. Observed associated conditions include heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune disease, chronic pain, migraine, respiratory illnesses and other conditions. It has also been observed the consequences on mental health illnesses like depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, personality disorders and multiple addictions. It is important to identify those patients who have suffered adverse childhood events and eventually suffer chronic conditions later in life. These individuals have a high susceptibility to physical and mental stressors.
